Welcome to shakydismount, a community for fannish feminist (mostly) parents. The purpose of this community is for fans to discuss media, books, comics, and other sundries with an eye not just towards gender representation, but also with an eye towards how the depictions of gender and gender roles affect our daughters and sons. While aimed primarily at parents, stepparents, and those who are or have been actively involved in raising children, the community welcomes aunts and uncles, grandparents, godparents, cousins, teachers, or just anyone concerned about how the next generation of fans is seeing (or not seeing) women and men depicted in our beloved sources.

shakydismount is a place to:

• Share books, tv shows, movies, comics, etc that you see as particularly positive in their depiction of gender and gender roles.
• Seek recommendations for books, movies, etc.
• Share outrage over some particularly problematic depiction (or lack thereof) of gender and gender roles.
• Discuss strategies for instilling awareness of these issues in our kids.

shakydismount is not a place to:

• Contest the impact of the depiction of gender and gender roles on TV, in movies, in books, in comics, on T-shirts, etc. This community is based on the belief that how women and men are depicted matters, and in particular matters to how our daughters and sons grow up perceiving themselves and the world. It is acceptable to disagree in a respectful way with someone's specific interpretation of a text or character. It is not acceptable to suggest we lighten up, it's just a TV show.
• Debate the merits of/necessity for feminism in general.
• Debate the overall merits of popular culture/television/etc. We're fans, and while we believe in being critical of popular culture, we still dream of the day our children can name all ten Doctors. You don't have to watch television to participate, but telling us just to get rid of our TVs doesn't really fly.
• Debate parenting choices in general, such as diapering, feeding, or childcare arrangements.

Other Rules
1. No personal attacks of any kind, period.

2. No linking to or reproducing locked journal entries. Likewise, no posting of personal emails without the sender's permission.

3. The mods reserve the right to intervene if behavior, while not specifically violating these rules, is proving disruptive to the community. We will attempt to resolve the matter in a way that best serves everyone's interests, but ultimately, if we tell you to knock something off, knock it off.
